The Town is in the process of combining the responsibilities of the Planning and Building & Fire Codes Departments to more effectively serve the needs of its citizens and visitors.
The newly established Community Development Department will meld together the responsibilities and employees of those two departments. The new department’s goals are to work on behalf of the citizens of Hilton Head Island to plan for responsible future development and to help promote an enhanced qualify of life that reflects the unique history, culture and diversity of Hilton Head Island. The department’s 36 employees will accomplish these goals in a manner consistent with the development policies and objectives set by the Mayor, Town Council, and various municipal boards and agencies. Compliance with adopted Town, State and Federal building codes and fire codes guide everyday actions to insure that review and approval of plans, issuance of building permits and on-site inspections are conducted in a consistent, lawful manner.

The Department is responsible
for administration and interpretation of construction codes, construction
permitting and inspection, maintenance of permit records and enforcement
of provisions of the National Flood Insurance Program in the Town of Hilton
Head Island.
