Town of Hilton Head Island
Beach Management Plan 1991

Executive Summary

The Beach Management Plan was prepared in compliance with the 1990 South Carolina Beachfront Management Act. Section 48-39-350 requires local governments, in coordination with the South Carolina Coastal Council (now called the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management-- OCRM), to prepare a local beach management plan.

The purpose of this plan is to inventory and evaluate existing conditions as they pertain to man-made improvements and natural conditions along the beach, to identify needed improvements to both facilities and regulations which enhance the beach and its use, and to develop a strategy which addresses these needed improvements and monitors and regulates continued growth along the beach. This plan is to be updated every 5 years.

The Plan underwent an update in 1996. The OCRM deemed no changes to the plan were necessary at that time.

Note: The 1991 Beach Management Plan and the 1998 Beach Access Plan will be updated during 2002.
