Bridge to the Beach Area 2:  Palmetto Bay Road Corridor

Projects

Description of Proposed Project
Implementation Schedule
1 - 2
yrs.
3 - 6
yrs.
7 - 10
yrs.
1
Provide pedestrian access on the north side of Palmetto Bay Road from Arrow Road to Dunnagan's Alley, designing the sidewalk/pathway to minimize impacts on wetlands and other natural resources, provide for storm water drainage in ways that do not degrade water quality, and include landscaping to enhance the aesthetics of the area. (In Ten Year CIP.)

2
Construct a landscaped median in Palmetto Bay Road from Arrow Road to Sea Pines Circle that includes bio-retention facilities in the median where feasible, left turn lanes, pedestrian crossings at the entrance to the Audubon Preserve and at Target Road, reduce storm water runoff and improve the water quality of the runoff, and improve the aesthetics of the roadway.

3
Provide pedestrian access on one side of the length of Arrow Road from Palmetto Bay Road to the existing sidewalk at the entrance to Outdoor Resorts, designing the sidewalk/pathway to minimize impacts on wetlands and other natural resources, provide for storm water drainage in ways that do not degrade water quality, and include landscaping to enhance the aesthetics of the area. Additionally, construct strategically located bridges to connect existing pathway behind Arrow Road businesses to new pathway. (In Ten Year CIP.)

4
Provide pedestrian access on one side of Target Road and Archer Road from Arrow Road to Palmetto Bay Road, designing the sidewalk/pathway to improve pedestrian connectivity and public safety, and include landscaping to enhance the aesthetics of the area.

5
Provide pedestrian access on both sides of Dunnagan's Alley from Arrow Road to Palmetto Bay Road, including a crosswalk on Arrow Road to connect to the existing sidewalk, and install landscaping to enhance the aesthetics of the area and create a walkable environment. Install a landscaped buffer around the electrical sub-station on Dunnagan's Alley in order to improve the aesthetics of the area.

6
Develop public parking in the area between Target Road and Dunnagan's Alley as an integral part of an overall redevelopment plan for the area.

7
Provide pedestrian access to connect the pathways in Sea Pines to the pathways at the Target Road/Palmetto Bay Road intersection, working in conjunction with the property owners in the area.

8
Provide pedestrian access on the north side of William Hilton Parkway from Arrow Road to the entrance of Long Cove, designing the sidewalk/pathway to improve public safety and include landscaping to enhance the aesthetics of the area.

9
Install pedestrian crossings which include refuges and pedestrian crossing lights on William Hilton Parkway at the signalized intersections at Wexford Village and at Shipyard Drive.

10
Develop vacant town owned property at corner of William Hilton Parkway and the Wexford entrance with a pathway and Mini Park to serve as a landmark for this distinctive area of the community.

11
Bury power lines along Target Road, Arrow Road, and William Hilton Parkway from Arrow Road to Sea Pines Circle to improve the aesthetics of the roadway and protect these important facilities during storm events. Consider relocation of power lines and burial of conduit in preparation for future power line burial as alternatives to avoid impacts on project scheduling.

Conceptual Drawing
This is a conceptual drawing of what the Dunnagan's Alley area might look like after Project 5 is completed.

6.Map 6

This drawing illustrates one possible scenario for the redevelopment of the area bounded by Dunnagan's Alley and Palmetto Bay, Target, and Arrow Roads.  Public parking facilities are an important element of such redevelopment to enhance the walkability of the area.

7. Map 7
Pedestrian connectivity is an important element of the redevelopment strategies for the BB2 area, therefor many projects are for the construction of additional pathways or sidewalks in the area.
