Town of Hilton Head Island PRESS RELEASE Contact: Scott Liggett PE, Town Engineer Date: February 6, 2007 SUBJECT: 2006 Beach Nourishment Project – Project Completion On Tuesday, February 6, 2007 the last of six (6) Atlantic Oceanfront sections of the Town’s beach renourishment project was completed. In total, over 2,000,000 cubic yards of sand has now been placed along approximately 8 miles of the Island’s shorefront. Crews are currently mobilizing to the last project segment at South Beach. Work is expected to commence here on Thursday February 8, 2007. All fill placement activities are expected to be concluded by Saturday February 10, 2007. Portions of the parking lot at the Town’s Islander’s Beach Park will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning Thursday February 10, 2007. The closure is required due to project demobilization activities and the removal of approximately 16,000 linear feet of beach renourishment pipeline which will be hauled away via truck from the site. The pipe will be transported from the beach and stockpiled in a portion of the parking lot to facilitate loading of trucks and subsequent removal. The park will be returned to normal operating conditions as soon as possible. In total, demobilization activities are expected to last for approximately 30 days. During this period considerable day time movement of heavy equipment on the beach is expected between South Beach and Islander’s Beach Park.
