On October 16, 2012 Town Council approved a conceptual plan to redevelop the Mall at Shelter Cove. The plan converts the mall to an open air, mixed use development containing retail, restaurants, and apartments, as well as a community park. The retail center will be anchored by the two Belk stores and a new Kroger grocery store, plus a mix of retail, restaurants, and shops.Much of the mall has already been demolished and the construction of the Kroger grocery store has started. Utility relocation and other site construction has already started as well, including the relocation of Shelter Cove Lane behind the shopping center which will help make room for a new Community waterfront park. The Town's Design Review Board has approved the architecture and landscaping for the rest of the commercial portion and the building permits are under review. The road is anticipated to be complete by the middle of this summer and Kroger will be open early next year.
