The Office of Cultural Affairs for the Town of Hilton Head Island and the Hilton Head Island Recreation Association are partnering to create a mural for the Island Rec Center, and are inviting the entire community to help paint it between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday, February 9.

Local artist Lauren Andreu will design the mural as a paint-by-numbers project on the wall in the Rec Center's new community room. On the day of the mural creation, residents of all ages can stop by, pick up a paintbrush and help paint the design.

The subject of the mural is the responsibility the current and next generation has to become the peacemakers of today. It will feature iconic peacemaker Ghandi who, across time and culture, has left a lasting legacy on the world. "He believed the world was an abundant place with enough resources and love available for all people, so that no one needed to be excluded. We will honor that legacy and paint the mural as a commitment to creating the world we desire to live in," Andreu said.

The mural project is free and open to the public; all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate. The Island Rec Center is located at 20 Wilborn Road on Hilton Head Island.

About the Artist:

Lauren Andreu is a Cuban and Puerto-Rican-American visual artist living in Bluffton, South Carolina. Based on her belief that man's deepest desire is to be known, she aspires to tell the introspective stories of her subjects. As viewers wonder at the emotion in her pieces, Lauren hopes they also pause to come out of their own automation and into a self-reflective state. Lauren is currently inspired by the divine greenery and waters of the Lowcountry. You can find her kayaking down the May River or sitting under her porch when it’s raining, listening to the water hitting the trees.

For more information or to schedule an interview with the artist, contact Jenn McEwen, Director of Cultural Affairs for the Town of Hilton Head Island, at 843-341-4703 or jennm@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.
