The Town of Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue recently received the Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating of Class 2. This is an improvement from the last rating of a 3 conducted in 2012. Fire Rescue's improved PPC Classification is a result of the Town of Hilton Head Island’s continued commitment to provide quality services to its citizens and visitors.

ISO currently evaluates over 40,000 Fire Departments Nationwide with only about 1600 earning the Class 2 Rating. The new Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating became effective March 1, 2019.

Fire Departments across the Nation are rated by ISO to determine a PPC rating. This rating is published by the ISO and may be used by Insurance Companies to determine insurance rates. The ISO Schedule develops a PPC number on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the very best and 10 representing less than minimum recognized fire protection.

The evaluation considers 3 main areas of a community's fire suppression capabilities including Emergency Communications (911 Communications Center), the Fire Department including equipment, staffing, training, and geographic deployment of fire companies and Water Supply. In addition, it includes a Community Risk Reduction section that recognizes community efforts to reduce losses through fire inspections, public fire safety education and fire investigation.

In general, the price of fire insurance in a community with a good PPC is substantially lower than in a community with a poor PPC.  Fire Rescue suggests that both home and business owner’s contact their insurance agents to inquire about a reduction of their annual premium based on the upgrade to a Class 2 PPC rating.
