Application Process Frequently Asked Questions

Openings will occur throughout the life of the two year hiring pool. As openings occur candidates are further screened and offered employment based on the needs of the organization.

Do I have to be at least 18 years old to apply?
No, you don't have to be 18 to apply but you must be at least 18 at the time of hire. So, if you will turn 18 by August 31, 2021, you may apply.

Do I have to have already graduated from high school to apply?
No, you may apply prior to receiving your high school diploma or G.E.D. but you must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. at the time of hire. So, if you will receive your high school diploma or G.E.D by August 31, 2021, you may apply.

I have taken a certified CPAT physical abilities test and hold a valid card, am I exempt from the Hilton Head Island physical assessment portion of the hiring process?
No, all applicants must take the physical abilities assessment held on Hilton Head Island. Dates will be provided once you have received confirmation you have passed the written exam.

Will I be considered for employment if I do not have experience or the certifications listed on the application?
Yes, but offers for employment are based on the needs of the department. A blend of experienced and inexperienced applicants may be offered employment at any time throughout the life of the hiring pool.

What does the hiring process consist of?
The process requires the completion of the application by the posted deadline, passing a written exam, successful completion of a physical abilities assessment, an oral interview, a background check, physical examination and drug screen.

When is an oral interview held?
The oral interview will be conducted the same day as the physical abilities assessment. You will be given a time for the interview once you have successfully completed the physical abilities assessment.

Will I hold a ranked position in the hiring pool once the process is completed?
No, all candidates who successfully complete all portions of the process are included in the hiring pool and are eligible for employment.

Do you allow individuals to practice the physical assessment at you location?
No, to maintain fairness, no practice sessions are held. The physical abilities assessment document provides tips on how to prepare for each portion of the assessment.

What do I do if I receive certifications or my contact information changes after the hiring pool is established?
Notify the Human Resources department at 843-341-4620.

Are expenses covered for travel for the testing or relocation if I am offered employment?
No, all cost related to the application process or relocation are the responsibility of the candidate.

Why do firefighters have to be EMTs?
Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue provides Advance Life Support transport - emergency medical services (EMS), on incidents occurring within the Town limits. Basic EMT certification is the minimum EMS certification required and approximately 50 of our members are trained to the paramedic (EMT-P) level certification. We respond to approximately 5000 emergency medical incidents each year which accounts for roughly 67% of our emergency call total.

What is the process if I am hired with no experience or certifications?
Once hired, you will go through an orientation period that will last up to two weeks. You will then report to the South Carolina Fire Academy for eight weeks of firefighter candidate training in Columbia, SC. Class is held five days week and candidates return to Hilton Head on the weekends. You will be enrolled in an EMT course held at a local technical college once you begin shift work. All cost associated with the training is provided by Fire Rescue.
