In recognition of July as Park and Recreation Month, the Town of Hilton Head Island is thrilled to share a sneak preview of its Adventure Playground Ship at the Lowcountry Celebration Park. It is located off of Pope Avenue, adjacent to the Coligny Beach Parking Lot.

The iconic ship is named for the vessel that explorer Capt. William Hilton traveled on to Hilton Head Island in 1663. He sailed the Adventure from Barbados to explore new lands and named Hilton Head Island after a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound.

"We Are Parks and Recreation" is this year’s national theme for Park and Recreation Month. Every day, in communities across the country, the people of parks and recreation are providing essential services and making their communities better places to live, work and play. Across the Island, the Town has an array of parks that offer access to recreation and a dynamic team of professionals who keep them beautiful year-round for the residents and visitors to enjoy.

Lowcountry Celebration Park, which will open later this year, will be the Town's newest addition. We can't think of a better time to start sharing how this park captures Island history and highlighting some of its unique and fun features, including a large lawn and stage to accommodate festivals, concerts and other gatherings; the Sandbox Children's Museum; walking trails and boardwalks; exercise stations; additional parking and improved access to beach parking.

The video, by videographer Gustavo Rattia, captures the Adventure Playground Ship as it was pieced together. Island musician Frederick Freon created the accompanying lyrics and musical vibes.
