On July 22, 2020 at 12:35 am Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire at 13 Harbourside Lane.

Upon arrival, crews found a fire in the service yard on the exterior of the building. Fire damage was contained to the outside of the building. Some of the building units were cleared of smoke but did not sustain any fire damage. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is possibly due to the auto-ignition of grease laden rags within the storage container located in the service yard. This typically occurs when grease laden rags are stored in a pile and heat has no way to escape, the temperature will raise to a level high enough to ignite the oil and ignite the rag or cloth. To prevent this from occurring store used rags in a metal container with a tight fitting lid, if possible fill the container with water, seal the top and do not open it. This will prevent the oils from oxidizing, and thus keeping the rags from heating up and igniting.

4 engine companies, the truck company, 1 medic unit, the Battalion Chief and additional Staff Officers responded to the fire.

The fire was under control at 12:56 am.
