Hilton Head Island Growth Framework

The Growth Framework strategy includes creating a Growth Framework Map, a big-picture plan showing where the island might grow and where it should be protected. This map will identify growth centers and edges, and guide decisions about future development on the Island..

Growth Framework Map

The draft Growth Framework Map outlines areas on the Island with potential for growth:

  • Primary Centers: These are the main areas where change is likely to occur due to factors such the type, location, age, and condition of existing buildings. These areas can be rebuilt, redesigned, or repurposed to meet the evolving needs of the community.
  • Secondary Centers: These areas consist of shopping and business centers that tend to change over time. These could evolve into spaces that support commercial activities and community functions.

Areas outside of these primary and secondary centers will be managed more carefully. These include residential neighborhoods, environmental spaces, and historical or cultural landmarks.

  • Edges: Edges are the zones where different areas meet. For instance, neighborhoods may connect at specific points, or developments may border natural spaces such as beaches, marshes, and wetlands. This project will focus on these edge areas to make sure the transitions between different zones are seamless and well-designed.
