Adaptive Traffic Signal Testing May Result in Traffic Interruptions

July 14, 2023

Equipment for the new Adaptive Traffic Signal Management System has been installed Island-wide and is now being tested and calibrated.

Testing started this week and will continue over the next several weeks during non-peak traffic hours (7 pm to 6 am) to minimize interruptions to traffic flow. The testing involves calibrating all traffic signals to ensure they function as planned when the system goes live later this summer.

Since testing began, the Town has have become aware of some glitches in the signal activity. "We have received calls about signals not registering traffic on side streets, resulting in no green light for motorists approaching from that direction," said Shawn Colin, Assistant Town Manager - Community Development. This error has impacted drivers’ ability to cross intersections or turn onto William Hilton Parkway.

"We thank the public for all the feedback and apologize for any inconvenience the testing has caused. The feedback, however, has been useful because it lets us know where the kinks are in the system so we can respond and calibrate the technology during this testing phase," Colin said.

Drivers who encounter unexpected delays at intersections between now and August 1 are encouraged to report the delay by:

Thank you for being patient as we continue testing and calibrating the system. For additional information about the Adaptive Traffic Signal Management System, contact Jim Iwanicki at 843-341-4774 or JimI@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.
