The Town of Hilton Head Island will be hosting its 13th annual Grinding of the Greens program to recycle natural Christmas trees and wreaths following the holiday season.
Recycling services for both trees and holiday string lights will be available 24/7 at the following drop-off locations from Tuesday, December 26, 2023, through Thursday, January 11, 2024:
Natural Tree Recycling
This service allows the public to drop off natural Christmas trees and wreaths after the holiday season. The trees will then be ground into mulch. Before dropping off any trees, please remove all ornaments, lights, and garland to ensure the resulting mulch is clean. When the grinding is complete, the public is welcome to stop by and pick up free mulch starting Wednesday, January 3, 2024. Mulch will be available until Thursday, January 11, or until it’s all gone.
Holiday Lights Recycling
The collection of holiday lights for recycling is being coordinated by The Outside Foundation, a local non-profit, in collaboration with I2 Recycle. Clearly marked bins labeled "recycled lights only" will be available for light disposal. After the collection period, the bins containing the lights will be shipped to a recycler.
