Town Council Approves Resolutions to Acquire Land for Development of Neighborhood Parks

March 11, 2024

In support of developing parks within its historic neighborhoods, the Hilton Head Island Town Council voted on Tuesday, March 5, to proceed with acquiring land located along Marshland and Wild Horse Roads.

The resolutions adopted outline plans to purchase:

The Town Council endorsed master plans for both parks back in December 2023.

"As we refine our vision for these community-based parks, we've sought opportunities to secure the necessary land for their comprehensive development. The strategic acquisition of these parcels will significantly enhance these parks' offerings," said Mayor Alan Perry.

The Marshland Road parcel adjoins the Town's existing property at 23 Marshland Road, which is designated for the development of the Patterson Family Park and will serve as critical access to the park property. Situated on 3.65-acres of undeveloped land, the park will primarily serve residents in the Historic Marshland and Chaplin neighborhoods and the Glen, a Habitat for Humanity community along Alex Patterson Road. This will be the first public park on the Marshland Road side of Broad Creek.

The park's planned amenities encompass biking and walking trails, expansive lawns, swings, seating spots, a designated playground area, interactive educational elements, outdoor grilling areas, a pavilion, and an elevated platform for overlooking Broad Creek.

Similarly, the Wild Horse Road tract, located in the Historic Squire Pope community, adjoins the Town’s property at 252 Wild Horse Road. This acquisition will further facilitate the development of the Taylor Family Park, including providing land for a planned future pathway. The park will be built on a 4.9-acre undeveloped parcel and serve residents along Wild Horse, Gumtree, and Squire Pope roads.

The park's proposed features include biking and walking trails, swings, gardens, lawns, a history trail, playground facilities, interactive educational components, outdoor grilling areas, and pavilions.

The Town anticipates closing on both properties within the next sixty days. Additional details of the purchase will be made available after the closing.
