The Town of Hilton Head Island invites residents and stakeholders to a community meeting to see the latest plans and features for the future Taylor Family Park. The meeting will take place as follows:
Town staff, together with the design team from local landscape architecture firm Witmer Jones Keefer, will share updates on the design and construction timeline for this new 4.9-acre park at 252 Wild Horse Road. The design for the future park has been shaped by the area’s history and ideas residents shared during previous community meetings.
Nestled in the historic Squire Pope neighborhood, the land has deep roots in the Gullah community. Once home to the McKnight family, a longstanding Gullah family, it later became the property of the Taylor family. Ultimately, the Taylors donated it to the Town with the vision of it becoming a place for neighbors to gather. That vision is now coming to life. The park’s design pays tribute to the area’s maritime heritage, reflecting its generations of fishing and shrimping, as well as the community’s connection to the nearby coastal waterway. It will feature a pavilion, picnic area, a walking trail with interpretive elements highlighting local history, and a playground that includes a custom-built boat inspired by Gullah traditions.
"Community input has been vital in creating this park space, which was gifted to the Town many years ago. The park will celebrate the history of the property and offer a vibrant space for families, neighbors, and future generations. I’m excited to see it come to fruition," said Mayor Alan Perry.
The Taylor Family Park project is part of the Town’s strategic goal to enhance community well-being by enhancing its network of parks and recreational amenities.
