Airport Tree Removal Approved and Scheduled for Week of October 20, 2025

October 20, 2025

The Town of Hilton Head Island has received a request from Beaufort County to authorize the removal of several pine trees located at 200 Dillon Road as part of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety compliance effort at the Beaufort County Hilton Head Island Airport (HXD).

The FAA identified these trees as potential obstructions within the runway approach and departure corridors, creating a safety hazard for aircraft operations. A detailed tree survey confirmed that 21 pine trees exceed the FAA’s maximum allowable height and penetrate the airport’s critical approach surface. The pine trees range from 64 to 91 feet in height and are located in three separate areas on the work site (please see map below).

All identified trees are located on airport-controlled property, along the airport’s northern perimeter, adjacent to Dillon Road. Beaufort County has contracted with qualified professionals to complete the tree removal. Work is anticipated to begin during the week of October 20, weather permitting.

This action follows the FAA's issuance of a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) affecting instrument flight operations at HXD until these safety clearance issues are resolved. The Town has worked closely with Beaufort County Administration and Airport staff to ensure compliance with FAA regulations and maintain the highest standards of aviation safety for the community.

The Town understands the community’s appreciation for its natural environment and the importance of maintaining safety at our regional airport. Every effort is being made to complete this work responsibly and efficiently, with minimal disruption to surrounding properties and the environment.
