Starting the week of November 3, 2025, the Town of Hilton Head Island will begin a paving project on a portion of Mitchelville Road within the Baygall Historic Neighborhood. Construction activities are scheduled to take place Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 5 pm, with all work expected to be completed by the end of December. The project includes the following scope of work:
Motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists are advised to exercise caution while traveling through the designated work zone and follow all traffic control and construction signs. The paving project aligns with the Town Council's Fiscal Years 2026-2028 Strategic Action Plan Goal #3: Enhance Major Corridors and Streets. Strategies focus on improving safety, mobility, aesthetics, and overall quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors.
"Our Strategic Action Plan provides a roadmap for essential projects that will enhance our communities with the aim of improving the quality of life for our residents and tackling longstanding issues, such as paving the dirt roads that are primarily found in our historic Island neighborhoods. Mitchelville Road is a beautiful, tree-lined road that deserves our attention," said Town Manager Marc Orlando.
The infrastructure upgrade on Mitchelville Road will transform it into a partially paved route, enhancing safety and accessibility for residents and visitors. The improvements will allow better access to municipal services, including Fire and Rescue vehicles responding to emergency calls in the area.
"Whenever we can improve a road by making it safer and more accessible for all users, especially emergency vehicles, it benefits the entire community – particularly the residents living along that road. Mitchelville Road is one of those roads that will be upgraded with new paving and drainage, making it easier for everyone. It's great to see this project moving forward," said Mayor Alan Perry.
