Beaufort County and SC Department of Transportation (SCDOT) are advancing a revised plan for the U.S. Highway 278 Bridge and Corridor. The revised plan replaces the original nearly $500 million six-lane bridge with a $311.6 million three-lane span over Mackay Creek and Skull Creek. The bridge will also be striped for two lanes but designed to accommodate temporary four-lane use during emergencies or when the westbound bridges are replaced in the future.
The Town of Hilton Head Island is advancing the William Hilton Parkway Gateway Corridor Master Plan to define the future of U.S. Highway 278 from Moss Creek Drive to the Cross Island Parkway with a focus on the corridor through the Historic Stoney Community and across the island's primary gateway. This work is a direct response to Beaufort County's recent decision to allocate all available corridor funding toward construction of an eastbound bridge span, leaving the remainder of the corridor through the island and its historic neighborhoods without identified resources for infrastructure improvements.
The Town's master planning initiative is intended to proactively shape corridor-wide investment priorities, with a focus on safety, community connectivity, neighborhood preservation, cultural recognition, stormwater management, and long-term capacity improvements. The plan will guide state, federal, regional, and local funding strategies and be delivered in time to support the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) South Carolina state budget cycle.
