Update on SC Department of Transportation Plans for Toll Booth Removal and Road Improvements on the Cross Island Parkway

February 1, 2022

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced its plans for removal of the toll booths from the Sol Blatt Jr. Cross Island Parkway and improvements that will be made to road.

SCDOT entered a $12.7 million contract with APAC Atlantic, Inc., a Savannah, Georgia, firm for work to be done as part of the Cross Island Parkway toll conversion. In addition to removal of the toll canopy and booths, the conversion project includes pavement removal, pavement reconstruction and resurfacing, and signage and striping along the parkway and ramps from U.S. 278 Business to the Charles Fraser Bridge.  Removal of the toll plaza is expected to be completed this spring and the remaining work is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

Currently, the contractor and SCDOT plans to limit work to evening hours. There will be no lane closures during the daytime or on state and federal holidays and other designated days. Additionally, there will be no lane closures from April 8 through April 20, to avoid impacts to the upcoming PGA RBC Heritage Golf Tournament. The 54th annual tournament takes place from April 11 through April 17 at Harbour Town in Sea Pines.

SCDOT officially stopped collecting toll for the Cross Island Parkway on June 30, 2021. For more information about the toll conversion project, visit www.scdot.org/business/cross-island-parkway-us278.aspx.
