Town of Hilton Head Island Expands Property Holdings

The Town of Hilton Head Island has expanded its property portfolio through recent acquisitions of three distinct and highly visible parcels. The transactions are as follows:

• 72 Pope Avenue. The Town secured 1.8 acres of land at 72 Pope Avenue for $4 million from Coligny LLC. This property, formerly home to Wild Wing Café, was procured using accommodations tax funds.  The Town’s main objective behind this purchase is to gain greater control over the site’s future use, especially with its proximity to Coligny Beach and Lowcountry Celebration Park. Given its location, the Town may use this property to provide additional parking for the beach and park and other opportunities that will directly contribute to the public's experience of these areas.
   
• Old Schoolhouse Park (Hilton Head Park). The Town has assumed full ownership of Old Schoolhouse Park, also known as Hilton Head Park, at no cost. Located at 152 William Hilton Parkway, the park was previously owned jointly by the Town and Beaufort County.  The Town recently resurfaced the existing courts there and transformed them into six dedicated pickleball courts.  
   
• Barker Field. The Town has acquired Barker Field at 70 Baygall Road at no cost through an exchange with Beaufort County. This park will continue to serve as a hub for outdoor recreational activities and will now be maintained by the Town.

“These property acquisitions significantly enhance the Town’s value on multiple fronts and contribute to our ongoing investments in our community. As our property portfolio expands, we gain opportunities to improve our delivery of services,  enhance our overall quality of life and add more amenities for our residents to enjoy,” said Town Manager Marc Orlando.
