Town Council Approves Purchase of 3.04 Acres at 71 Shelter Cove Lane

June 8, 2023

The Hilton Head Island Town Council voted unanimously to enter into a contract to purchase property at 71 Shelter Cove Lane for $3.938 million on Tuesday, June 6.

The 3.04-acre property is situated on the northeast corner of William Hilton Parkway and Shelter Cove Lane. Once the site of the former Cracker Barrel restaurant, the property is adjacent to several Town-owned parcels. It is bordered on the north by a marsh front inlet along Broad Creek and on the west by the trailhead that leads to the Town's recently opened Shelter Cove Sculpture Trail.

With this purchase, the Town will own approximately 50 acres of waterfront property from Shelter Cove to the Chaplin community.

"This is a strategic property acquisition that protects sensitive Broad Creek frontage for open space, park, and recreational opportunities and will enhance the quality of our natural environment for our residents and visitors," said Mayor Alan Perry.

The purchase will allow for an extension of the pathway and park system that winds along Broad Creek and includes Shelter Cove Community Park, Veterans Memorial Park, and the Shelter Cove Sculpture Trail. Plans for the site include a boardwalk over the inlet to connect the newly acquired property to another Town-owned parcel further upstream and allow for additional waterfront trail opportunities along Broad Creek.

The Town anticipates closing on the property in early August. Additional details of the purchase will be made available after the closing.
