Town Council Approves Purchase of a .52-Acre Site on Mathews Drive

The Hilton Head Island Town Council voted unanimously to enter into a contract to purchase property along Mathews Drive for $350,000 on Tuesday, June 20. The .52-acre site is situated at the mouth of Broad Creek, near Matilda Drive, and across the street from the Central Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

"Hilton Head Island prides itself on being an environmentally friendly community. Although small, the strategic purchase of this tract continues our pursuit of acquiring and protecting sensitive Broad Creek frontage for green space. In doing so, we will help protect the creek’s environmental quality," said Mayor Alan Perry.

In recent weeks, this is the Town's second acquisition of property that includes Broad Creek marsh front views, allowing the Town to further preserve land for green space and other community uses. Earlier this month, the Town Council voted unanimously to enter into a contract to purchase 3.04 acres of property at 71 Shelter Cove Lane for $3.938 million. It is situated on the northeast corner of William Hilton Parkway and Shelter Cove Lane. Once the site of the former Cracker Barrel restaurant, the property is adjacent to several Town-owned parcels. It is bordered on the north by a marsh front inlet along Broad Creek and on the west by the trailhead that leads to the Town's recently opened Shelter Cove Sculpture Trail, with expansive views of Broad Creek.

The Town anticipates closing on both properties in August. Additional details of the purchase will be made available after the closing.
