The Town of Hilton Head Island invites the community to its 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony to honor the 2,977 individuals who lost their lives during the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The event will be held:
Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 8:30 am Veteran’s Memorial Park 59 Shelter Cove Lane
This special service, coordinated by the Town’s Fire Rescue Department, will also pay tribute to the bravery of first responders, the resilience of survivors, and the strength of communities coming together in the face of adversity.
The ceremony will feature guest speaker Kevin Stout, who led a distinguished career in public safety for more than 30 years in New Jersey. Stout served as a fire marshal with the Monmouth County Fire Marshal’s Office before retiring. He also was a commander for the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team, where he led critical operations in emergency management. Additionally, he served as a police officer with the Howell Township Police Department.
Stout’s extensive experience in law enforcement and the fire service in Monmouth County provided him with unique insights and information leading up to, during, and following the tragic events of the Sept. 11. Stout and his wife Nancy, who is also a retired police officer, have a residence in Bluffton. They are both involved with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and participate in the organization’s 5K Run & Walk in Bluffton and Low Country Golf Classic on Hilton Head Island.
Bells will toll throughout the ceremony, followed by brief periods of silence. These moments will coincide with the times of the tragic terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon building in Arlington, Virginia, and aboard Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania:
