Bicycle Friendly Community

Gold Level Recognition

The Town of Hilton Head Island is recognized as one of the top 39 bicycle-friendly communities in the United States and one of 34 to achieve the Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award from the League of American Bicyclists.

The Town is one of only three Gold Level communities in the Southeast and only one of five on the East Coast to receive this designation.

The Gold Level distinction recognizes the Town's commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through its investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.

Earning the award was a collaborative effort between the Town, Bike Walk Hilton Head Island, and the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. The BFC application effort had considerable volunteer support from the local cycling community.

The Town had held Silver-Level BFC status since 2011 with the Gold-Level status first awarded in 2015. The Town's award has been renewed consecutively with the Gold-level status in 2015, 2019 and 2023.
