Sign Permits

All new signs, replacements, or changes to existing signs on Hilton Head Island require a sign permit.

Sign Permit Process

A Project Manager will be assigned to guide you through the entire process and be your point of contact for any questions.

Step 1. Submit Your Application

Download the application and submit it with all required materials, including sign details, photos, sign location, etc., to cdic@hiltonheadislandsc.gov or in person at Town Hall, 1 Town Center Court.

Filing Fees:

  • $25 filing fee
  • Plus $25 for each side of your sign (called a “sign faceâ€�)

Step 2. Staff Review

After your Sign Permit Application is received, a Project Manager will be assigned to guide you through the entire process and be your point of contact for any questions.

  • If your sign is smaller than 40 square feet, Town staff can approve it without requiring a public meeting.
  • If your sign is larger than 40 square feet, it goes to the Design Review Board for consideration.
  • For those larger signs that require a public meeting, your Project Manager will write a report with a recommendation, and the Design Review Board makes the final decision.

What happens at the Design Review Board meeting?

  • The report created by the Project Manager will be shared with the Design Review Board before the meeting for their consideration.
  • At the meeting, the Design Review Board Coordinator will show your sign plan to the Board.
  • You are encouraged to attend the meeting to answer questions from the Board members.
